People vs. Hamsters

30. December 2005

Some people have chuckled under their breath about our “little blog” and the fact that we post probably-inane comments and pictures (and lately a nearly-singular focus on Coldinski).

Well… All I can say is that this website takes it to a whole new level. I actually like it. It made me chuckle under my breath. Which is a refreshing change. Ah the trials and tribulations of life as a hamster.

Social Smiles

Not sure that we could have asked for a better Christmas present. Today Colin decided it was time to start smiling even when he didn’t have to pass gas! Debra tells me they call that social smiling, but I don’t know why. I’ve seen lots of guys whose saw passing gas as social. :?
In any event, we like our new Guy Smiley!

Q: What kind of bees make milk?
A: Boo-bees!

So there were these two peanuts walking down the street and one of them was a-salt-ed.

The Kids Learn to Share

Nala, who wasn’t so concerned about Colin’s arrival earlier, has taken a recent interest in this “smelly” new thing. She is often sniffing Colin whenever he is on our bed (probably just because that is her bed, damnit!). But she’s also pretty sweet. And when the Boppy pillow isn’t available, she shares her belly to the same effect.

Tundra, on the other hand, has decided a better approach to dealing with Colin is to “escape” and hang out at the far end of the house where it is probably a lot quieter. So in Colin’s as-yet-unoccupied bedroom, she’s taken up residence on his changing table. But she is quite willing to share it with its eventual owner…

THE COLINATOR

2. December 2005

[Many people don't realize that young Colin leads a secret double-life as... THE COLINATOR, protector of regular people everywhere. I thought I should share this, just so people can understand how special Colin really is.]

When we last joined our hero, he was cozily sleeping on his parent’s bed—something he doesn’t get to do much but seems to really enjoy—but that repose was not to last… You see, something sinister was lurking in the mail that day.

After opening a package from one of Deb’s colleagues at Dow Jones Online, our apartment was overrun by a rampaging alligator (named, uhhh, “Cheerful”). The ironically-named beast first ferociously attacked THE COLINATOR’s mother, took turns terrorizing the resident—live—animals of the house and even had daddy cowering behind a closed bathroom door.

THE COLINATOR would have none of it! He had to protect his family and flung himself at the (uhh, soft and cuddly?) monster. At first, Cheerful was on top of THE COLINATOR and things looked grim, but our hero had one final trick up his sleeve. Only THE COLINATOR could know that a wet tongue to the ear was the alligator’s Achilles Heel…

We were saved! After such a brutal day, THE COLINATOR needed another nap—this time in his “bouncy chair” with a blanket to keep him warm.

[This installment of THE COLINATOR was brought to you by a cool gift from one of Deb's colleagues, who Matt also works with on occasion.] (Thanks Cheryl!) [And, yes, I do realize that this post, by itself, makes it very obvious I should get back to my day job, which I will be doing on Monday.]

Momma Time

2. December 2005

Colin is getting plenty of momma time—as these pictures suggest. So much mommy time, in fact, that Colin has gained a pound and an ounce since he was born. Most babies, by contrast, are generally back up to birthweight at 10-14 days.

We found out about Colin’s weight at his first doctor’s appointment with Dr. Wendy on Tuesday. Turns out everything is fine, even the fact that his belly button hung around longer than mommy and daddy would have liked (it finally came off yesterday!). Colin had a big outing that day, not only did we visit the doctor, we went to Babies “R” Us and swung by my office so I could pick up some packages I needed to get sent out.
