It can best be summed up in the following picture (which I actually took a couple of days back—waaaay back when I thought it was cute…).

Colin’s First Week

27. November 2005

Colin has had quite an eventful first week (or so) of life.

We were pretty amazed at how long Colin’s fingernails right from the moment he was born. In what we thought was a pretty bizarre twist (though at least we knew to expect it), the hospital is not allowed to cut the newborn’s fingernails. That struck us as weird, but even weirder when we were told that the reason they couldn’t “cut” Colin’s fingernails was because that would technically be surgery! Oooookay.

That said, I don’t blame them—it is pretty scary cutting those tiny nails, but Debra and I had to do it almost as soon as we got home since he’d already scratched himself on his face once.

Three activities Colin has particularly enjoyed this first week are his (1) after-dinner naps with his mother, (2) an occasional escape from the apartment—this time to Target, of course!—and (3) story time with his dad. Colin has been out of the apartment twice already, it turns out he seems to really like the car and the bumpier the road the better. He’s a bit of an oddball that way; we’d also noticed the other day that it seems like he also likes it very noisy. Grandma and Grandpa had stayed up later than Deb and I and were watching football while Colin slept soundly. As soon as they turned off the TV he started crying. I’d also noticed he calmed down as we got closer to the noisy mixer on Thanksgiving day.

But, of course, Colin’s favorite activity is sleeping… His parents are thrilled whenever he indulges that one!

Colin Goes Home

26. November 2005

In all my excitement to get pictures posted, I know I have been posting these in a somewhat backwards order. Colin isn’t just now coming home, he came home Saturday, November 19th, but I am only now parsing through the photos.

We were very excited to get out of the hopital—as you can imagine!—after spending nearly six days in a pair of antispetic smelling rooms. We were kind of upset to learn that although Debra was to be discharged at 9 or 10 Saturday morning, Colin had to stay a full 48 hours after his birth, meaning we were stuck there even longer until 1:32p that afternoon.

In any event, once we were given the green light, we had to get Colin ready to go home. It took both of us to get him into something more than the t-shirt and diapers he’d been wearing in the hospital. Once we finally got him into his “going home” clothes, he looked great. Thanks to Grandma Reed for the wonderful outfit!

As has seemed to be true with everything new for the baby, the first time we tried to get him into the car seat was a … challenge … as you can see from Colin’s “happy” expression. He was much happier—dare we say ecstatic? or would that be pushing it?—upon arriving home for the first time. A wonderful “daddy” blanket made by his Aunt Suzy and Grandma Reed kept him warm on his ride home. (The same blanket also kept Colin’s daddy warm while he slept in the chair next to mommy at the hospital on several of those first nights in the labor and delivery room!)

The first thing Tundra did when we brought Colin home was investigate. She is still a bit tripped out about all of this “Colin” stuff. She’s still ticked off since she used to get to sleep in the Pack-and-Play before we brought Colin home. I’d be pissed, too, I guess, if I got to use a cozy new bed for a while only to have it taken away for use by another—nosier!—person a month or so later.

Grandpa Carl and Grandma Judie had sent a wonderful bouquet of flowers to welcome Debra and Colin home from the hospital. In an extremely well-timed delivery, the flowers arrived about an hour before mother and child…

We’ve got photos of Colin with his mother and father, and some with his paternal granparents. Can’t wait to get photos of him with everyone else! He’s been asking when he gets to meet his cousins and get pampered by the rest of his grandparents, aunts & uncles…

In case anyone is keeping track—and evidently Debra is (just so she can make fun of me)—we’ve taken 238 pictures of Colin so far. Not counting the ones we’ve deleted…

We TOLD You We Had a Turkey in the Oven

Happy Thanksgiving!

We’re just now waking up after a triptophan naps—we had a wonderful (!) Thanksgiving meal with lots and lots to be thankful for this year! Hope you all got to spend quality time with family (and at the dinner table).

[Thanks (or blame) for this photo idea goes to Colin's mommy based on too many corny jokes about the ol' "turkey in the oven"... It made us laugh, anyway.]

Colin was born November 17, 2005 at 1:32pm in the afternoon. He weighed 9lbs and was 21″ long.

You will all be happy to hear I am recovering from what was obviously not one of the easiest labor and delivery. But regardless of the trials and tribulations we brought home the most beautiful little boy ever, at least that’s our opinion.

Matt gave me a wonderful present for being a new mother, a video camera! So in addition to some wonderful pictures we will also be able to provide some moving pictures of our little one. Colin has surprised us in many ways already one of which is his ability to get out of a tight swaddle with his strong legs. Here’s a video of him kicking and giving his lungs a work out. It was funny while Matt was getting this video ready in the wee hours of the morning I kept jumping a little because I thought it was the real life Colin crying, not a video version. I caught on after I heard it about 4 or 5 times in a row.

We’ve also been bragging to many people about Colin’s gorgeous blonde head of hair and it was pointed out that in all of the pictures we have provided so far Colin is wearing a hat. So here is a picture of the hair he got from his mom!

Blonde Colin

Matt and I are very motivated today because we are posting not just one, but TWO posts about Colin!
