This video is the answer to the question: “What is Colin’s current favorite game.” That’s right… Who hasn’t played a good game of Fall Over in their day.

I had a good old-fashioned LOL when I read the take on Silicon Alley Insider take on the press release Dow Jones issued about some General Manager changes and my coming back to The Wall Street Journal Digital Network.

Well, actually, that’s the question. How do you read your news? In the last week or so there have been some interesting pieces of news/opinion that have come out in the media world that prompt my curiosity.

One is an opinion piece from AdAge magazine envisioning a world in which Dow Jones folds the print version of The Wall Street Journal in favor of an online-only edition.

The second is an article from Mediapost announcing topline findings from a recent Pew Research Center for The People & The Press survey that basically states that the web is still a secondary medium for news.

One article seems to contradict the other—although, admittedly, the AdAge article doesn’t give a specific timeline of this imagined conversion to Online-only and the Pew Research study shows an unmistakeable flight to the web from “traditional media”…

In any event, back to the question: how do you get your news?

Some colleagues at The Wall Street Journal financial ad sales group got Colin one of his very first toys after he was born. He loves it! We had taken some pictures of him with the fire truck around Christmas, but they are mostly a photographic exploration of mom and dad’s arms and how they vainly try to hide them as we took pictures of him on the truck holding him up. I guess they’re kind of funny in their own way, but these are so much better. Plus, his head is finally big enough to keep the hat from falling down over his face. I think Colin is all about “driving” these days, his current favorite toy is a musical little dashboard with steering wheel that sings (over and over… and over and OVER) “are you driving? are you driving? on-the-road? on-the-road?”

We just got back from a trip to Puerto Rico—where we stayed at El San Juan Hotel & Casino—for a Dow Jones Integrated Solutions/Dow Jones Online sales meeting. Since dad works at DJIS and mom works at DJO (when she’s back from maternity leave) and both were in attendance at the meeting, Colin tagged along. The meetings went very well, but we only took pictures of the “fun” stuff…

The main thing we did, of course, was go to the pool. Colin hadn’t ever been in a pool (or anywhere it was warm outside for that matter!), so it was quite an experience for him. I think he liked it, but mom and dad did push it a little by dunking him in the water as you can see in this video:

Right click here to save movie to computer

Mommy didn’t end up spending that much time in the water so it was mostly daddy and Colin. We had lots of fun—but it was too bad it wasn’t a heated pool. I think Colin got cold before he got sick of being in the water. Afterwards, we chilled out (heated up?) in a towel and then sat around contemplating what we thought of the whole experience. I don’t know why, but I just love that last picture of him.

Colin also got to meet some of the folks that mommy (Penny from London) and daddy (Andrea from NYC) work with. He was a huge hit at the sales meeting with everyone from the publisher of The Wall Street Journal to randoms at the resort commenting on his size (huge!), his smile (so cute!), his demeanor (happy!), etc…. We did decide that our theory about people who know daddy thinking he looks like me and people who know mommy thinking he looks like Deb is no longer valid. Now we just think people say whatever pops into their head, because we had people saying all kinds of things about who he looked like—besides, he just looks like a baby.

I send 160 emails a day. Am I a bad person?

Of course reading this article forced me to go back and take a look at my email habits, which I sometimes feel can be a bit obscene. Take Monday of this week (and I should point out this week has not been one of the busiest in recent memory), I sent 55 emails between 9a and 5p. That’s significantly more than the InformationWeek blogger, but I only had a total of 107 recipients, averaging only about 2 recipients per note.

Not sure what all this tells us, but it is a bit interesting to evaluate the extent to which we are clogging up our colleague’s emailboxes… I think I’m okay.

I just finished watching it for a second time and see it as undeniably plausible. It’s also pretty interesting in that it is written as a future history of media from the vantage of 2014 (after the “news wars of 2010″)…

EPIC (the evolving personal information onstruct) is the eventual amalgamation of such indsutry giants as Amazon.com, Google, Blogger.com and Friendster, and represents a guess about how we may be consuming media in 8-10 years.

Take a look. I’m curious what you think. (My favorite line: “In 2014, The New York Times has become a print-only newsletter for the elite and elderly.”)

It does make some interesting points about feeling “tired and lethargic” from being constantly interrupted—I can see that. Since reading the article, I’ve tried to be very conscious about not interrupting my workflow each time I hear the new email chime and I have increased my productivity twelve-fold. Okay, not really, but it has seemed to have an impact.

Also interesting to me that this research was sponsored by HP, which has long touted it “always on internet infrastructure;” I wonder if the gentleman who signed that research check still has a job…

The upside is that Deb did NOT get sick in the whole process, but the downside is approximately $45 in cold medicine and $150 in juice.

I thought I left the West Coast to work in New York City? So what’s up with my being on a plane headed for the Pacific timezone again? At least I’m going to Southern California for a little variety rather than heading right back where we started from.

All that to say the job is going well. I’m very much enjoying the new (old?) job with Dow Jones Integrated Solutions. There are going to be a lot of similarities to what I was doing before at Dow Jones, but it looks like it will be different in all the right ways. I spent much of my first week getting up to speed, working on one particular pitch (for which I am now flying to help present; too bad I didn’t get the one also happening tomorrow—in Detroit!) and meeting with folks from other Dow Jones properties. It is exciting, but probably a bit busier than my first 8-years at Dow Jones and certainly busier than these last several months of transition.

I’m back in New York tomorrow evening. Can’t wait.

After a week of worrying more than we should about the details, the Big Move to the Big Apple is starting to come together. (Which is a good thing since it happens in like 5 days!)

The movers are coming on September 13 to pack all of our stuff into myriad boxes and containers. It is weird to see an estimate for the weight of all your worldly possessions. In our case: 6,400 pounds. I am still trying to figure out where all that weight is coming from. Must be dishes. Anyway, they come back on the 14th to load everything onto the semi that will ship it all cross-country. They pick up our Beetle the same day to ship it across country on one of those scary trucks carrying vehicles that look as if they’re going to fall off at any moment (I checked about insurance).

We fly out the next day—Sepetember 15th—on jetBlue flight 56 from OAK to JFK which gets us into New York at around 8 o’clock that night. This will be a flight of firsts. Deb has never flown jetBlue and experienced live DirecTV while on an airplane (it’s cool! 6 hours of CNN HeadlineNews). And neither of us have flown with our kitties. Yes, that’s right, Nala and Tundra are taking to the air… (We bought sedatives.) The funny thing is, we have to get to the airport extra early to make sure the little menaces are properly screened before they can board. Those poor screeners.

Once we get to New York, we’ll be staying at the Marriott Marquis right in Times Square. Ironically it turns out to be one of the cheapest places to stay in the city on such short notice, and it is about 2 blocks from our office at 1155 Avenue of the Americas. Deb and I—and the kitties—will be staying here until October 1st or until we can find an apartment of our own. I think both of us are hoping to find the apartment sooner than that since we remember living with both cats in a hotel for 3 weeks when we first moved to San Francisco. The hotel’s high-speed Internet connection also means it will be Deb’s office until we find our apartment.

Wish us luck!

As some of you will have heard by now, it is true. I am headed back to Dow Jones. My last day at my current job is September 14th and I will be back at Dow Jones starting on September 20th as Sales Development Director for Dow Jones Integrated Solutions.

I’ve loved my time at Business 2.0—and I will be leaving behind a group of people I’ve really enjoyed working with—but the opportunity at Dow Jones is just too good to pass up. Plus we’ll be moving to New York which is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while now…

So exciting!

Deb and I am are beginning the process of figuring out where we should live (any thoughts?). It is going to be a hectic couple of weeks, but we cannot wait to get out there to NYC and start wearing all black!
