Or, I guess you might be able to call this post: “Only in New York”…
Anyway, I was walking home from work on Friday and saw a gentleman vacuuming the sidewalk in front of one of the hotels just down the street from where Deb and I live.
I had never seen that before.

I might have forgotten it if I saw it before 1950, but I am pretty sure that since then I have not seen that action. I’m not sure it’s an “Only in New York” item, though — somehow I imagine some German or Japanese city as having seen vacuuming of sidewalks — or am I stereotyping here?

In Austin they have big vacuum trucks that go up and down our street every couple months vacuuming the sides of the streets. The first time I saw it I noticed the driver was a woman. I imaged her thinking to herself:
“I make the effort to get out of the house and get a job, and now what am I doing, vacuuming again!”
On the similar line, a few weeks ago after the side window was broken out of my truck by the person stealing the truck radio I found myself vacuuming the driveway to get the glass cleaned up.
Still, I agree with you, I’ve never seen the sidewalk being vacuumed and that would have amused me too.

I wonder how often you have to change the bag when vacuuming the sidewalk. Is it dust, dirt, rocks (not in NY City, I would guess), butts, or bigger stuff like hot dogs, etc.??

Wow vacuuming! That is a rare sight…at least at my house. Or maybe it was the sidewalk part you all thought was so strange.
