Thank You for Smoking

Or, perhaps a more appropriate title would be “random photos Matt found while moving furniture around the house so we could put a bunch of extra crap into storage“… Anyway, sorry to those incriminated, and for those who weren’t—I have a lot of photos.

Geesh, guys. You are supposed to hide those pictures, not share them for the whole world to see.

That way, when your kids are big enough to try to accuse you of being hypocritical for telling them not to smoke, they do not have any actual proof….

I just realized I left out a whole part of this post. I meant to actually talk about the movie “Thank You for Smoking” which is supposed to be really good. Haven’t seen it yet, but was curious if anyone else has?

Oddly enough, we were watching X-Men 3 last night, and one of the previews was for “Thank You For Smoking.” As the preview was playing it dawned on me that your post must have had something to do with the movie. I think I might have to see the movie now, just out of curiousity….

Matt, why does my husband seem to get into so much trouble when he hangs out with you? Paintball anyone?

Why couldn’t this post have waited until summer? One of my favorite students tried to visit my website yesterday. Today, he told me, “Mr. Ellsworth, I tried to go to your website yesterday, and all I found was a picture of you smoking a cigar. Is that the right site?” I replied, “No, that is my brother’s site, here’s the correct website. I’ll email him right away.” Punk! You have photographic evidence of one time I smoked. (It may have been the only time, but I think I have smoked a cigar on one other occassion.)

Somehow, nobody here looks quite himself while smoking. Besides, I had to take a closer look to verify that Matthew was smoking. At first look, he seemed to be pondering (alarmed) the possibility of eating a buckeye; a closer look was vaguely pretzel-like; only closest inspection confirmed a cigar, apparently far gone as of this picture.

Let’s see, is Ed a reporter? I think part of the reporter mid-century image was the ability to retain a cigarette without actually clamping lips on it. Do they give courses?

Perhaps these two grandsons of C.E. Brown are copying his smoking habit. Always one cigar with the guys at Lodge card parties. He always said it was in self defense – at the time the room was blue with smoke.

I complimented my wife on that comment, and checked with her, and yes, those lodge events were called “smokers”. Since I never saw the man smoking (having never gone to the smokers), I must allow his claim of “self defense”.

Were these pictures from the Bellows cabin in the woods? I think David and I left a little early from that. The quality of second-hand smoke was distinctly better than average, but still, it *was* exhaled burned leaves. ;-)

I seem to recall a post from about a year ago–ah yes here it is, Mr. Moral Authority: http://ellsworthlink.net/archives/2005/10/13/as-if-you-needed-another-reason/ If you don’t feel like clicking on the link, the first sentence from that 13 Oct 05 post was: “I’ve always thought smoking was dumb.” I must say though that looking at your goofy mug on this post tells a different story…just teasing… See, I put a grin in there…
